Gi vs. No Gi

At FLOBJJ we believe in training with the traditional uniform (Gi) and without (No Gi). We believe in order to enhance our effectiveness in any self- defense situation, it makes sense to be trained in both.

So what are the differences?  Gi and No Gi are the 2 forms of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Gi Jiu Jitsu is grappling with the use of a traditional Gi, which allows you to grab the clothing of your opponent. No Gi is grappling without the traditional uniform; instead you wear shorts and a rash guard. In No Gi you cannot grab your opponent’s clothing.  To be a complete BJJ player, you should train in both.

The Gi in some ways is more complex with all the grips that are learned, but No Gi has many other aspects which are not found in the Gi (for example, there are more brabo chokes, guillotines, and footlocks than in the Gi).  No Gi Jiu-Jitsu is usually faster paced, while the friction and grips in Gi Jiu-Jitsu allow practitioners to slow down the fight. Most of the highest level champions in Jiu-Jitsu have trained in both forms of the art.  Although most practitioners naturally learn to prefer Gi or No Gi, both are a very fun and effective martial art to learn.

FLOBJJ FOR KIDS

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a very physical martial art, and for that reason, parents sometimes wonder if it's appropriate for their child. However, our program is very safe and closely monitored by our coaching team, and we truly believe Jiu-Jitsu prepares children to face and overcome uncomfortable situations by applying the critical thinking skills the art provides.

Jiu-Jitsu mostly takes place on the ground. There are no strikes involved, so both children and adults are able to more readily practice the moves and techniques they learn in class with partners. During training, children get the chance to “live” grapple and try and submit their classmates using the chokes and joint locks they learn. Sometimes this makes a child uncomfortable. Usually after only a few classes, though, they learn that just being in a position of discomfort isn’t a reason to panic or give up. As we train them to defend each of the positions in the program, children learn to remain calm, breathe, focus, and look for solutions, as well as build upon what they've learned to constantly improve.
